"Active Cultures/Active Couture" — Tiers La Familia's second tape in six months — finds bandleader Joe Sidney continuing to carve out a singular, wildly eclectic electro-punk sound.

Working with mix engineer Jon Erickson, Sidney utilizes low-grade keyboards, a madcap approach to sampling, and his trusty digital eight-track recorder to create lo-fi beat music with unpredictable verve. The result is akin to El-P's early Def Jux productions, the grimy breakcore of Machine Girl, and Bobby "Boris" Pickett's classic single "Monster Mash." Amidst the idiosyncratic madness, Sidney makes sure there are plenty of hooks to sugarcoat the punkish abrasion.
